Background:
The Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia Hunting & Conservation Branch of SA works closely with government departments and environmental groups to assist in conservation efforts. The H&C branch, which is run purely by volunteers, provides a species specific and cost neutral tool in removing predators, pests and problem species. It also assists with wildlife and vegetation surveys, collection of research specimens and empirical data, warren destruction, revegetation and restoration of historical sites.
The SSAA H&C of SA requires all activities to be conservation focused and has been involved in projects such as the National Parks (DENR) "Bounceback" program. It is an active member of a number of groups including the Friends of Parks, the Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby Preservation Association, the Nature Foundation SA and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy The group's initial project in South Australia, and a prime example of what can be achieved by using hunting as a conservation tool, commenced almost 20 years ago.
The Government of the time required assistance in controlling a dominant feral goat population in the Vulkathuna-Gammon Ranges National Park, 750km north of Adelaide. Continued cooperation between the two groups has resulted in the growth of ground cover, the return of Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby populations and clean waterholes.
The success of this project has led to H&C SA being involved in similar initiatives in national parks across the state.
