High Performance, Large Caliber Firearms

SSAA Para recently submitted an application to SAPOL Firearms Branch for the use of High performance Calibers at SSAA Para.

The SSAA Para Council is pleased to announce the approval to conduct the sighting in of high performance large caliber firearms, with the following conditions.

Conditions

1.    Only the right hand side of the 300 metre backstop which is fitted out with overhead and side coverage is to be used.

2.    Only timber target frames, paper or cardboard targets, set back inside the opening of the backstop/catchment area are to be used, and

3.    Only the calibers listed on your correspondence of 2 December 2010 are approved for use.
a.    .338 Lapua
b.    .375 Cheytac
c.    .408 Cheytac
d.    .416 Barret
e.    .460 Steyr

4.    Only financial and active members of SSAA Para Branch Inc are approved to use high performance large caliber rifles of a caliber approved by the Delegate on the SSAA Para Branch Inc range, and

5.    All persons using this portion of the range for sighting in of high performance large caliber rifles approved by the Delegate must be under the supervision of a SSAA Para Branch Inc range officer, and

6.    The firing of rifles for this activity must only be conducted from baffled firing positions that have appropriately manufactured and adjusted baffles fitted to the existing baffles system located immediately in front of the shooting positions, and

7.    members wishing to use this facility for sighting in rifles of the calibers noted above must make an appropriate booking with the range administrators and must be supervised during any such activity, and

8.    The use of full metal jacket, steel cored, solid brass or solid copper projectiles is not approved.

A review of this activity and facility will be conducted in conjunction with the next range inspection. Should it be found that the above conditions are not being complied with or if it is found that there is a safety issue associated with this activity, withdrawal of this approval will be considered.
