Jeanine Baker Wins CSFC President's Award
Dr
Jeanine Baker, immediate past president of SSAA (SA)
Inc., was awarded the 2007 President's Award by the
Combined Shooters and Firearms Council of South
Australia at a Presentation Dinner on Saturday,
September 1st., 2007.
Nearly five years ago, Dr Baker
was elected to the prime leadership role of
President of SSAA (SA) Inc and filled that position
with distinction for four years. During this time,
she devoted her boundless energy to tackling some
very difficult problems. Her ability to work through
them has greatly benefited all shooters in SA, not
just members of the Sporting Shooters Association.
The
Award was presented by Mr Rob Lowe on behalf of the
council.

As SA
President, Dr Baker was also a member of the
SSAA
National Board and apart from managing SSAA State
business applied herself with great energy to many
issues, including:
following:
-
Ensuring that every
“anti-gun” announcement or news story is
answered by an accurate, but contrary, press
release within 24 hours.
-
Ensuring that electronic
media assaults by “anti-gun” crusaders are met
with like and the opposing protagonists are
debated live on air, whenever possible.
-
Ensuring that ‘academic’
research papers by the “anti-gun” activists are
promptly critiqued and errors exposed by the use
of genuine statistics from unimpeachable
sources.
-
Undertaking academic research
in relation to firearms issues, writing
authoritative papers, having them peer reviewed
and succeeding in having them published in
internationally recognised professional
journals. Hence starting to develop a body of
creditable knowledge contrary too much of that
which is often quoted to our detriment.
-
Being a prime mover in the
formation of Women in Shooting and Hunting
(WISH) and conducting many of the same functions
for and with them.
-
Actively lobbying at State
and Federal level on firearms regulatory issues.
Among
her many achievements were:
-
Undertaking extensive
consultation with SA Police and ministerial
advisors.
-
Being appointed to the
Firearms Consultative Committee.
-
Being involved in Federal Government
consultation with the Attorney
Generals' Department, and
being invited to participate further.
-
Being a participant and
contributor to the recent past international
firearms laws conference in New Zealand, and
being invited to participate in the next one.
-
Being involved in the
Australia Post debacle over the carriage of
firearms and parts by international post. In the
first instance, Jeanine was able to disprove
most of the Australia Post assertions as to the
need for such restrictions. She has also been
able to identify and propose innovative ways for
Australia Post to manage carriage through some
foreign countries, hence almost solving their
problems for them. Such was her contribution
that the Minister invited her to be involved
throughout the whole process.
-
Promoting the involvement of women and juniors
within the shooting sports.
-
Coordinating and facilitating the training and
National Accreditation of a group of coaches for
SSAA (SA) Inc.
SSAA
(SA) congratulates Dr Baker on her achievements and
extends its gratitude for her efforts on behalf of
all shooters not only in SA, but Australia wide.
