If you haven't yet tried sport shooting or have only had limited experience at the range, you might think there isn't that much variety. There's a firearm and a target, so how different can that get, right? Actually, shooting offers a great deal of variety.

The SSAA's shooting competitions, commonly referred to as 'disciplines', are the backbone of the Association and include the use of many types of firearms such as shotguns, pistols and revolvers and rimfire, centrefire, air and black powder rifles, depending on the discipline and competition concerned.

Some of the disciplines allow you to  simulate real hunting activities or hone your shooting skills before you get out in the field. Clay Target shooting, for instance, was originally derived from real bird hunting, while Scoped Field Rifle and 3-Position allows you to practise the various stances and positions required for accurate hunting. other more specific disciplines such as Combined Services, Muzzleloading and Single Action permit the use of various types of period-style firearms and allow participants to re-enact the activities of certian time periods or events, giving shooters a whole new dimension to their sport.
