We have many matches suitable for junior shooters in air rifle, rimfire and centrefire, ranging from benchrest to metallic silhouette. Lever Action is popular with juniors and covers distances from 100 metres down to 25 metres and includes a rapid fire segment adding to its appeal. Other matches suitable for juniors are Field Rifle and 3 Positional. Metallic Silhouette utilises knock down targets. All these matches are suitable for .22 rimfire rifles. Air rifle is a
match that is often shot on indoor ranges. It is a match that many juniors enjoy. It teaches discipline and patience and instils respect. Its scope covers different types shooting from cut-out targets which must be knocked down to score, to traditional "bullseye" targets. Ranges vary from 10 metres for bullseye shooting to 36 metres for silhouette targets. Air rifles can range in price from as little as $300 to more than $2000.
Many target air rifles too heavy for youngster to handle, so some clubs allow the use of a stand for beginners, progressing to off-hand shooting as skill and competency increases. A handicap system can also be used to ensure all
juniors compete on an even footing. In South Australia, juniors are classed as such until they are old enough to qualify for a firearm licence at the age of 18. They can shoot in any match under adult supervision. Some states require them to hold a junior firearm licence. Our juniors can apply for a special, non-renewable licence to enable them to travel and compete in those states that require a junior licence. |
