Target shooting is a popular pastime in
South Australia with thousands of people sharing the experience every weekend. There are 25 affiliated clubs in SA and all have their own shooting range or have access to one. Target shooting can be undertaken by young and
old, able and disabled alike. Many SSAA clubs undertake a junior development program.
There are many different matches conducted over varying ranges from 25 metres to 200 metres and
beyond. Centrefire metallic silhouette ranges out to 500 metres. Silhouette targets are
depicted at left.
One of the fastest growing disciplines is Single Action shooting.
Single Action originated in America, but a local derivative, known as Colonial Action is attracting adherents. Competitors use firearms and dress in clothing suitable to the era, around 1850-1870 for single action and 1850 to federation in the case of colonial action.
Many sportspeople support the SSAA. Olympic representative Michael
Diamond has appeared in the SSAA video "Introducing the SSAA". One of Australia's greatest fast bowlers, Glen McGrath, makes no secret of the fact that he is a keen shooter, hunter and camper.
Olympic and Commonwealth Games shotgun shooter Suzy Baloch is another who has defended her sport. Shot gunning is a popular SSAA discipline.
